Hot Mulled Cider

1-quart apple cider or apple juice
1/2 cup Imperial Sugar Light Brown Sugar or Dixie Crystals Light Brown Sugar, firmly packed
2 tsp. whole allspice
1 tsp. whole cloves
2 cinnamon sticks, each about 3” in length
Dash ground nutmeg
Calvados (or any apple flavored brandy), for serving (optional)
Lemon or orange slices, garnish
Cinnamon sticks, garnish

Combine the cider or juice with the Imperial Sugar Light Brown Sugar or Dixie Crystals Light Brown Sugar.  Stir to dissolve the Imperial Sugar Light Brown Sugar or Dixie Crystals Light Brown Sugar.  Add the allspice, cloves, cinnamon sticks, and the dash of nutmeg.  Cover and simmer (do not boil) the mixture twenty to thirty minutes to heat through and infuse the flavor of the spices.  Strain the mixture to remove the spices.  Keep warm until serving.  Lace each cup of cider with a splash of Calvados or any apple-flavored brandy, if desired.  Serve with a slice of fresh lemon and cinnamon stick for stirring.  Recipe yields six to eight servings.
