Cranberries are fruits full of nutrients typically available from October through December. Cranberry recipes were enjoyed at early New England holiday fall feasts. Bright red cranberries have been adding beauty, tartness and sweetness to the family dinner table for centuries.
Cranberries are delightful when accompanied with turkey, chicken and pork – and can have many variations in recipes. In fact, you don’t have to limit yourself to the store-bought, canned, jelly version for your Thanksgiving or Christmas cranberry sauce this year.
While they are tart berries when eaten raw and by themselves, they add a zing of flavor and sweetness when added to salads and entrees. Fresh cranberries also make delicious desserts, savory side dishes and hearty sauces and jellies.
When selecting fresh cranberries at the market, look for those that are plump, firm and deep red in color. You can store fresh cranberries in the refrigerator for up to 20 days. After which you’ll want to freeze them or you’ll be reaching for the tin can version in your pantry.
