Set your Thanksgiving table with beautiful salt dough leaf napkin decorations made with love by your little chefs. Made from our 1995 salt dough recipe, these decorations are fun to create. There’s nothing like spending time with family in the kitchen during the holidays – and this craft is a great way to do it.
These Salt Dough Leaf Napkin Holders will dress up each place setting beautifully. Try using different food coloring in fall colors to make your table warm and welcoming. These would look gorgeous on any dining table during the entire fall season.
These napkin holders can be a special gift for your guests, too. After the last piece of pumpkin pie is eaten, guests can “leave” with this gift to remember their special time together with friends and family. These can also be hung on the Christmas tree as ornaments.
- 2 cups salt
- 1 cup water, divided
- 1 cup cornstarch
- Tin foil covered baking sheet
- Red, yellow and orange food coloring
- Leaf shaped cookie cutter
- Ribbon, twine and/or tulle
- Stir salt into 1/2 cup of water in a medium saucepan.
- Cook over medium-low heat until hot.
- Remove from heat.
- In a bowl, mix the remaining 1/2 cup of water with the cornstarch until smooth.
- Add the cornstarch mixture to the salt mixture.
- Return the saucepan to the stove and cook, stirring constantly over medium-low heat until the mixture thickens into the consistency of stiff mashed potatoes.
- Turn mixture out onto a glass plate and cover with a damp towel.
- Allow to cool, then divide dough into 3 equal parts. Add red food coloring to one, yellow to the second and orange (often a combination of red and yellow) to the third batch.
- Flatten the dough with a rolling pin or with your hands. Use the leaf cookie cutter to cut out multiple shapes.
- Bake the leaves on a tin foil lined baking sheet at 250 degrees for 2-3 hours until completely hard.
- Let cool, then attach to cloth napkins with ribbon, twine, or tulle.
