Sugar String Snowman
Sparkling Sugar Ornaments

Doesn't your heart just melt when you see this adorable chilly snowman? With some simple ingredients, you can make this show-stopping sugar string snowman. Use him for a decorative touch to your home. Add some friends or make a snowman family. Customize your own snowperson to make he or she look like you want. Add any accessories to make it your own. Hands (or sticks) down, this craft is fun to do for kids and adults alike!

Supplies:

  • Cotton string – white
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 2 cups Extra Fine Granulated Imperial Sugar
  • 3 balloons
  • 2 large black buttons
  • 4-5 red small buttons
  • Festive ribbon {or scarf and hat}
  • Twigs from the yard
  • 1 carrot

Directions:

  1. Start with 3 balloons. Blow them up to three sizes – small, medium and large.
  2. Loosely wrap each balloon all over with string. Kids might need a little help getting this part started.
  3. Combine 2 cups of sugar and 1 cup of warm water in a bowl a bit larger than your largest balloon.Mix until the sugar has dissolved.
  4. Dip and roll each balloon in the sugar syrup until all the string is saturated.
  5. Hang to dry overnight.
  6. Once dry, then pop the balloons and pull out the deflated balloon pieces.
  7. Take the largest balloon and push it gently into the counter to flatten the bottom so the snowman has a base of support. Gently flatten the top of the largest sphere, the top and bottom of the medium ball, and the bottom of the smallest globe.
  8. Using a glue gun, attach the three balls together so they will sit securely on top of each other.
  9. Add the button eyes, the carrot nose, the button mouth, the twig arms and the scarf using the glue gun as necessary to attach.
