Being a Christian based celebration Mardi Gras originally started on the feast of the Epiphany and ended on the day before Ash Wednesday. Depending on where you live Mardi Gras is celebrated differently, some people start celebrating with events starting as early as Thanksgiving while others consider the last 3 days before Lent to be Mardi Gras.

The Tuesday before lent is sometimes referred to as Fat Tuesday, which is just before the Lenten fast and when people celebrate by (over) indulging in rich foods. Fat Tuesday is the literal translation of Mardi Gras from French.

New Orleans is famous for their Mardi Gras festival where parades and costume parties abound.  Mardi Gras recipes often center around Cajun food because of the Cajun roots in the New Orleans area.

If you can’t make it to New Orleans for Mardi Gras then why not breakout your favorite Beignets recipe and host you own celebration. You can stick to Cajun food or serve just about anything for your party snacks, the main objective is to have fun with your family and friends.
