Description
This Thanksgiving, let kids help decorate the table by creating woven paper placemats adorned with fall leaves. These placemats are a fun activity to do before the holiday, or even while you’re waiting for the meal to finish cooking. Kids will love combining colors to make different effects and adding their own cut out leaves as sweet embellishments.
Ingredients
Homemade Sugar Glue
- 1 1/2 cups flour
- 1/2 cup Imperial Sugar Extra Fine Granulated Sugar
- 1 1/2 cups water
- 1 tsp vegetable oil
Supplies
- 9x12 construction paper (brown, red, green, yellow, orange)
- Ruler
- Scissors
- Pencil
- Brown marker
- Homemade sugar glue (see Ingredients section)
Directions
- Mix flour, sugar, water and oil in a pot and stir over low heat until well combined and smooth in texture to make decoupage. Set aside to cool to room temperature.
- Cut four different colors of construction paper lengthwise into 3/4 inch strips.
- Draw a line down the edge of another piece of construction paper 1 inch from the short side of the paper. Repeat for the other end.
- Mark 3/4 inch intervals on the inside of the two lines. Cut along your marks, creating slits in the paper that are 3/4 inches apart. This will be the base of your placemat.
- Weave the paper strips through the slits in your base, alternating with each color.
- Once the slots in your base have been filled by strips, use the homemade sugar glue to affix the ends of the strips to the ends of the base. Trim up the ends.
- Cut leaf shapes of out spare construction paper and add accents with the brown marker. Adhere to the woven placemat using the homemade sugar glue.
- Allow to dry completely and your woven placemat is ready for your holiday table!
